Patch testing
What is a patch test?
Before applying hair colour to your scalp, we can carry out a patch test to help ensure the products we use do not cause an adverse reaction.
A patch test is a simple procedure that involves applying a small amount of hair dye to a small patch of skin. This allows us to observe any reaction and identify potential allergies.
Why do a patch test?
Your safety and comfort are our priority. We recommend patch testing before any hair colouring service as a proactive step to minimise risk.
It is particularly important before using hair dye products containing Paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a powerful ingredient that can sometimes cause allergic reactions — especially for colouring services involving contact with the scalp.
How we test
Patch testing is usually done 48 hours before the appointment.
Our stylists will ask a few questions first to ensure it is safe to apply the colour sample.
The patch test involves applying a small amount of dye mixture to the skin (often the crook of the arm). You’ll be advised not to wash the area for the next hour.
Risks of a reaction
While the risk of an allergic reaction to PPD is relatively low, severe reactions can occur (including contact urticaria or, in extreme cases, anaphylaxis). More commonly, reactions present as dermatitis around areas such as the eyelids or ears.
People frequently working with PPD may develop sensitivity, sometimes resulting in dermatitis on the hands.
If you have an allergic reaction to the patch test, you will not be able to use oxidation-type hair dyes containing PPD. We also recommend informing your doctor.
Your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities — we want you to have a comfortable and enjoyable experience at our salon.
